On a sloping, wooded site high in the Berkshire Hills with a long view to the east, our challenge was to create a spacious contemporary house with a New England feel. We knew that a massive block of a house would overpower the site and probably be a sore thumb in the landscape, so we broke the house into four pieces, rather like farm buildings that had been assembled over a period of time. This allowed us to expose every major room to the dramatic eastern view, to discreetly separate the master bedroom from guest bedrooms, and to attach the garage as a link between house and guest house. The result is four parallel gable roofs of varying sizes, linked by a membrane of low connecting structures.
